Hey everyone, thanks for checking out the newly relaunched PWPodcasts.com. It’s still very much a work in progress, but I’m excited to help make this the go-to destination for in-depth wrestling podcast reviews and news.
Like most of you, I’m a huge fan of wrestling and of podcasts. Putting them together is just about the greatest. When I’m on a long car trip these days, music has taken a backseat to Steve Austin yelling in my ear about his latest sponsor in the way only he knows how, or Jim Ross telling some old tales from his lengthy career.
I’ve spent countless hours of my life just clicking on one random Youtube wrestling interview after the next, and, of course, I listen to quite a few hours of PWTorch audio shows every week. I also co-host the Post-Impact Blog Talk Radio Livecast show every Thursday night with Mike McMahon. Basically, my life is roughly 82% wrestling related.
The thing is, with so much amazing wrestling podcast content out there it’s impossible to take it all in. Just in the last year since the site went dormant, Tony Schiavone, X-Pac, Lillian Garcia, Edge and Christian and Bruce Prichard have all started popular shows. This is where PWPodcasts comes in.
Wade Keller and I have been putting together a great team of contributors who are going to be publishing weekly recaps of all the biggest shows out there. They’ll be providing you with detailed summaries of your favorite shows, along with the biggest news pieces and talking points from the episode. That way if you’re crunched for time, you can get the gist of what happened and still keep up, or if it sounds like a particularly good show, you can dive on in and listen to the whole thing. I’ll also be updating the site regularly with interview highlights and news across the wrestling world.
The site will likely be going under some changes in the coming weeks and months, but I’m excited with what we’ve done so far. Now with that lengthy introduction of the way, I’d like to take this space to look back at the week that was in the world of podcasts and interviews and talk about some of the bigger (or more random) stories. Here are a few noteworthy items:
-Lana revealed on Busted Open that she was disappointed her storyline involving her, Rusev, Summer Rae and Dolph Ziggler was cut short. While it’s understandable from a personal standpoint to have something taken away like that, from a character standpoint, it was probably a GREAT move. That angle was among the worst of 2015, and likely would have continued being terrible. Bad angles that keep going rarely morph into good ones. See Bray Wyatt and Randy Orton for further proof. I just don’t see how her and Ziggler wearing matching jean jackets was going to do anyone any favors.
-Bruce Prichard gave us some insight into the mind of Vince McMahon on Something to Wrestle With this week. The topic was brought up due to the failure of Giant Gonzalez in the WWF. While by all accounts Gonzalez was a great guy, he was one of the most uncoordinated wrestlers who ever competed on the national scene. However, he was big. Very big. And Vince liked that and didn’t want to listen to anyone else. He had an idea of what he wanted Gonzalez to be, and didn’t want to hear anything to the contrary. Sound familiar?
-Damien Sandow said he may “possibly” return to Impact someday. He may also be done with wrestling. If that’s the end, it would be unfortunate. Sandow was likely never going to be a main-event player in the industry, but he had something. When he was in Impact as Aron Rex and started morphing into his past “Savior of the Masses” gimmick, it seemed to be working. But he threw it all away to become Liberace. In a way, that’s like Joe Montana playing for the Kansas City Chiefs (on a much smaller level). It’s just not how you want to see him go out. If he has the drive and passion to keep going, a run in Ring of Honor would be interesting. However, he’s also talked about wanting to get into movies, so he may be out of the business for some time. Remember, though, almost no one stays away for good.
All right. In the future, this will likely be shorter and we’ll jump to the bigger stories sooner, but I wanted to set up an introduction and simply say “welcome back!”
Also, while we have contributors set for quite a few shows, please email us at PWPodcasts@gmail.com if you’re interested in covering a particular favorite podcast of yours, or if you’d be open to giving a new show that has a lot of listeners a shot.
Check back daily, as we’ll have a growing number of recaps and news articles in the near future.
