Vince Russo left the WWF in 1999 and has become one of the most noteworthy figures to never return to the company (besides a couple of in-house documentary cameos and an incredibly brief stay in 2002). However, he revealed to Fightful that he recently talked to Vince McMahon about a potential return. Here’s what he had to say:
“I’ve reached out to Vince McMahon in the past week. He got back to me. I am still a wrestling fan at heart, going back to when I was 10, 11 years old. I hate today’s product. To me, it’s not professional wrestling. I don’t want to be the guy critiquing the problem without saying ‘Here’s my olive branch, I think I can help you as the numbers go down every week.’ I didn’t use the word help. You don’t tell Vince McMahon he needs help. I said ‘if you want me to contribute, I’d love to once again contribute.'”
However, it doesn’t seem likely that he’ll be making a return. Apparently, McMahon wasn’t very “receptive” to the idea:
“Vince never seems receptive. His response is always a couple of words. He’s not that guy. He’s the same guy that told me I could get a nanny (to raise) your kids.”

(Soucek’s Analysis: Even though Raw and Smackdown’s ratings are struggling, it’s hard to imagine McMahon would hire back the former writer. After all, Russo was briefly rehired in 2002 but quickly left the promotion. He was almost immediately demoted from Head Creative Director to Consultant when it was clear he wasn’t going to be able to work well within Stephanie McMahon’s new writing team structure. Russo soon left the Consultant role to join the upstart TNA.)
