1:20 – What’s on My Mind

AEW Press conference

  • JR thought they told the message that AEW is real and another Global Wrestling company is real.
  • The presentation by and large was well done and the appearance of Jericho was well booked. He is their biggest star and the longest tenured global star. However JR doesn’t see him being on the weekly TV schedule.
  • It appears Cody will be taking care of the singles wrestlers, the Young Bucks have the tag teams and Brandi will take care of the women.
  • The AEW shirt has become the number one selling shirt on Pro Wrestling Tees.
  • The Double or Nothing PPV will be on May 25th in Vegas at the MGM Grand.
  • JR feels Kenny Omega will sign with AEW.
  • Overall, good start by the Khan family and J.R. appreciates their commitment to the wrestling business.

Around The Horn

  • Impact’s Homecoming PPV was on this weekend which J.R. enjoyed. He liked the LAX vs. The Lucha Brothers tag match.
  • Impact will be broadcast on the Pursuit Network and will be simulcast online on Twitch starting Friday at 10:00pm ET.
  • Hopefully this will get more eyes on the product because their creative is as solid as it’s been in a long time.
  • Highlight of RAW was the Gene Okerlund tribute. Hogan did a great job.
  • He didn’t like the Brock/Braun confrontation and it didn’t help Strowman. In hindsight, having the dressing room keep them apart would have been effective but their segment didn’t feel quite right.
  • The highlight of Smackdown was establishing Becky vs. Asuka at Royal Rumble
  • J.R. enjoyed Wrestle Kingdom. It was logical, hard hitting, fundamentally sound wrestling based on athleticism and athletic competition.
  • J.R. was surprised to see Kushida is leaving for the WWE. He’s happy to see Kushida’s last match will be against Tanahashi but this is a good get for the WWE.
  • J.R. said on Twitter the product of wrestling is generally over produced. He doesn’t like that talent are given scripts to memorize which can be challenging and makes it difficult to deliver with passion.

32:53 – Slobberknocker Of the Week

  • This week’s winner is the WWE production crew for their work on the Mean Gene tribute on RAW

38:54 – Pet Coon Goofy Award

  • This week’s winner are the people who thought it was a good idea to use a faux used tampon in a pro wrestling environment.

46:41 – This Week In Wrestling

  • Royal Rumble 1989 – Second Royal Rumble and first on PPV. Big John Studd eliminated Ted DiBiase to win the Rumble. King Haku with Bobby Heenan beat Harley Race to win the King of the Ring crown and cape.
  • January 11th, 1991 – WCW live event. Tom Zenk defeated the Black Angel to retain the TV title, Lex Luger defended the US title against Mr. Hughes in a football challenge match, The Steiners beat The Master Blasters, Arn Anderson and Barry Windham beat Doom in a non-title steel cage match and Ric Flair defeated Sting to become the first WCW champion.
  • January 11th, 1993 – The first Monday Night RAW. Yokozuna, The Steiners and Shawn Michaels got a win. The main event was Undertaker vs. Damien Demento.

Q: How long did it take J.R. to accept the opening up of the business and the influence of the dirt sheets?

A: J.R. is still not comfortable with the proverbial pulling of the curtain back and doesn’t know how this helped anything with regards to the creative presentation.

Q: Has J.R. ever seen Vince McMahon with facial hair?

A: The closest he’s ever seen Vince with facial hair was watching Vince shave or seeing him before he shaved.

Q: Any chance of getting Ted DiBiase or Paul Heyman on the show?

A: Yes. Both have been on the show and were great guests.

Q: Does Kane get the respect he deserves from fellow wrestlers?

A: Hell yeah. He is one of the most respected people J.R. has known in the business and says he has never signed anyone with as much character.

Q: What does J.R. think of AEW doing a weekly show on a streaming service like Amazon?

A: Ryan Satin will be on the podcast and they will be discussing but you can’t do a press conference like AEW did if you’re not set on your TV outlet. Getting on a basic cable channel is imperative

1:15:53 – Ryan Satin

J.R. welcome Ryan to the show.

TMZ

  • Ryan starts off telling J.R. his late wife Jan gave him the coolest night in wrestling. During a Wrestlemania after party, Jan introduced him to a bunch of the wrestlers. Jan was also a huge TMZ fan.
  • Ryan says the TMZ newsroom is competitive as everyone is trying to get air time on the show but it’s low key. There’s a vibe at TMZ where if you want to be on the TV show, they use you less. Everyone checks the edit of the show to see which of their segments got used.
  • When Ryan first started at TMZ, he was a production assistant but wanted to working on the news desk so he could start pitching his own stories.
  • Ryan said the crew would make fun of him for liking wrestling but they were surprised at how popular wrestling was. Generally, TMZ would only cover wrestling if someone died but Ryan wanted to do more well rounded stories.
  • Ryan wore wrestling shirts from Pro Wrestling Tees. Wearing the shirts on TMZ as well as the wrestling community and wrestlers noticing him was the reason he started his own website.

All Elite Wrestling

  • Ryan says there were things you could nitpick about the AEW press conference but as a whole, they came out swinging and started with a bang showing they’re not an indie promotion. This is the most excited Ryan has been since the Attitude Era to cover wrestling.
  • J.R. recently got some heat for a tweet he put out asking why more of the males in WWE aren’t using Twitter to push their matches or personas compared to the women. Ryan agrees and says one of the reason the women are starting outshine the men is because of social media. For the most part, the men are using social media to talk crap about people on social media which doesn’t help with promotion
  • Cody, Nick and Matt EVP while Tony Kaan is president and Shad Kaan is lead investor.
  • J.R. says if you’re going to have something resemble a legitimate athletic presentation then wins and losses should matter. AEW is saying wins and losses matter which indicates they’re going back to a more athletic event with drama, timely comedy and big personalities. Ryan agrees and wants wins and losses to matter. WWE has a hard time building to marquee matches because wins and losses don’t matter.

  • J.R. says NJPW have done a good job of building special matches with a smaller roster and keeping rivalries exclusive. He thinks NJPW is the closest thing to what AEW might be. Ryan says you can show NJPW to someone who likes sports and they will think it’s an athletic event. But when he watches New Japan he misses the TV aspect and entertainment. He hopes AEW has NJPW wrestling with entertainment that is less demeaning to your intelligence. Being The Elite is an adult show which is not aimed at children which is the key to getting the audience back. Present a more adult based product.
  • J.R. and Ryan think AEW have a TV deal locked up. It may not be completely signed but they will have a prominent TV partner. Ryan agrees TV is important and if you want to be a top company you have to be in TV.
  • Cody and Brandi spoke to the media after the press conference. Ryan had his reporter have them ask about the possibility of a TV deal. Cody turned over the mic to Brandi who did the ‘corporate speak’ while Cody winked at the camera.
  • Cody said the reason they didn’t make more announcements at the rally was because they wanted Jericho to be the highlight.
  • AEW have a challenging scenario because they have talents involved in administration, booking and creative which can cause other talents to be uncomfortable.
  • J.R. thinks that even though Cody and the Bucks are good guys they’ll realize that when you start making creative decisions that affect someone, and if wins and losses mean something, that could be an issue. JR says they’ll need to learn how to lose but still get over. Ryan thinks they are going on that direction. During the press conference, the PAC/Page scenario showed the Cody and the Bucks were not going to concentrate on themselves.
  • Ryan also says Omega is locked into AEW once his New Japan contract runs out and thinks Page and Omega will be highlighted.

  • The AEW nucleus will grow with new people and the Khan’s are going to pay going rates for wrestling.
  • The beautiful part about new promotions is the starting. Sinclair has lots of assets and muscle but they don’t flex it much. ROH could be so much bigger and profitable but they don’t want to get out of their comfort zone. Ryan thinks this is why Cody and the Young Bucks wanted to leave ROH because promotions like ROH and PWG are unwilling to take risks.
  • J.R. thinks AEW has an opportunity to make a lot of money but doesn’t see them competing with the WWE. Ryan says you have to make noise to get attention and take risks. Ryan doesn’t think AEW will not be serious competition for WWE right now but if you want to become that, you have to treat yourself as such. Perception is key. AEW can eventually create an alternative to the WWE.
  • J.R. says why does it matter if you’re number one…why not just be profitable and have a good business?
  • Check out www.prowrestlingsheets.com. Ryan makes sure to do proper fact checking as this is something that bothered him when he read other internet wrestling websites.

J.R thanks Ryan for being on the podcast and they sign off.

Rating – 6.5/10

Before getting into this review…please note, this is a very subjective rating…..

Subject wise, I was into this show because of the All Elite Stuff. But, I had a very hard time listening to the podcast, especially the interview. This interview more than previous ones had J.R. talking about his opinions with Ryan reacting. In fact, when I was writing my recap, the gist of it was…J.R. says this…and Ryan agrees. It was almost like J.R. was interviewing himself with Ryan throwing in his views here and there. I’ll admit, I almost shut this off because it bothered me that much. I’m still going to recommend this from a subject perspective but that’s about it. Of course, all the other normal segments are on this podcast as well.
